Devon Allman has blues-rock in his DNA. That distinctive sound has been shaping his music since he first started playing guitar as a teenager, all the way to his recent albums with the Allman Betts Band. But for his first solo album in eight years, Miami Moon, Allman freed himself of any genre expectations, picked up a bass guitar, and wrote a series of songs informed by R&B, funk, and alt-rock.
"Previously on my records, I was carving out something that I felt needed to fit into contemporary blues or straight-ahead rock & roll," Allman says. "That wasn't on my mind this time. Instead, the goal was to write music that moves me." The result is Miami Moon, an undeniably feel-good album that evokes the promise of crystal-blue skies, never-ending humid nights, and the summertime of our dreams. Recorded at Criteria Recording Studios in Miami, the legendary outpost where Allman's father, Gregg, and the Allman Brothers Band cut LPs like 1972's Eat a Peach, produced by Tom Hambridge along with a stellar band featuring Meter's bassist George Porter, Jr, keyboardist Ivan Neville, and drummer Adam Deitch.
In late September of 2023, as he collected a world-record achievement for performing 50 concerts in the 50 states of America in 49 days, it seems like Devon Allman is just getting warmed up. The modern rock troubadour and torch-bearer for the legacy of the blues has led bands such as Honeytribe, Royal Southern Brotherhood, and The Allman Betts Band in equal step with his prodigious solo output and his own Devon Allman Project, racking up thousands of touring miles under the hood, and creatively never standing still. A singer-songwriter, guitarist, keyboardist, producer, and record label chief, Allman has earned widespread critical acclaim, as well as top Billboard chart positions and numerous awards, across two decades of musical heritage and invention. Too, his annual, personally curated, (and rebranded in 2023), Allman Betts Family Revival Tour- a star-loaded trek across the U.S. honoring the legacy of The Allman Brothers Band- has become one of the more highly anticipated concert events of the year. As well, the Texas-born, St Louis-based Allman extends his sphere of influence as a longtime member of the board for the National Blues Museum, helping to preserve and further the craft of that treasured American art form.
